National Chi Nan University (NCNU) karate team shone in the karate competition of the 2021 National Intercollegiate Athletic Games on October 8–11, 2021, held at Chang Jung University. Pei-Yu Hsiao (蕭霈瑜), a senior in NCNU's Department of Public Policy and Administration, competed with athletes from 30 colleges and universities and won the gold medal in the women's solo competition (Kara), and the bronze medal in the second weight class of the sparring discipline competition (Kumite). NCNU karate team ranked fourth in the team competition.

The 2021 National Intercollegiate Athletic Games were organized by Ministry of Education and hosted by National Cheng Kung University. This event is the most important annual sports competition for colleges and universities. This year, athletes from 30 colleges and universities competed in the karate competition, including the University of Taipei (formerly Taipei Physical Education College), National Taiwan University of Sport, National Taiwan Normal University, National Taipei University of Education, Chinese Culture University, Fu Jen Catholic University, National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology, Chang Jung University, Fooyin University, Shu-Te University of Science and Technology, and NCNU.

The members of NCNU's karate team used their spare time for training every week. Among competitors from sports academies and departments, NCNU athletes excelled and won a gold and a bronze in individual games and fourth place in the team competition. NCNU athletes defeated players from traditional sports academies and active national level players in several open competitions, which is a huge recognition for NCNU students, who have been dedicated to training for a long time.

The gold medalist, Pei-Yu Hsiao, received a silver medal last year with a score just 0.02 points behind the gold medalist. This year, she vowed to win the gold medal and successfully obtained the highest score in the preliminaries in the woman's Kara category before advancing to the finals. She was against a strong opponent from Taipei City University in the championship game and scored 21.88 points in the end, winning 1st place in the women's Kara category, which is also the best record in NCNU's history of karate sports. Continuing the winning momentum, Pei-Yu Hsiao won the bronze medal in the sparring discipline event that afternoon.

Although NCNU does not have a physical education department, the university has cleverly combined local resources and geographical advantages to develop rowing, archery, softball, karate, and swimming sports year by year and has successfully created a specialized and robust athletic program.
